Thermal scope spec sheets are full of numbers that can be confusing if you don't know what they mean. This guide explains every important specification in plain language so you can make informed comparisons between different thermal scopes.
Expressed as width x height in pixels (e.g., 640x480). This is the number of individual thermal detector elements on the sensor. More pixels means more detail in the thermal image. A 640x480 sensor has over four times more pixels than a 320x240 sensor.
What to look for: 384x288 is the minimum for serious use. 640x480 is ideal for long-range or professional applications.
NETD measures how sensitive the thermal sensor is to small temperature differences. Expressed in milliKelvins (mK), lower is better.
Why it matters: On a warm summer night when the ground is still radiating heat from the day, a scope with 25 mK NETD will show animals much more clearly than one with 50 mK. In winter with cold backgrounds, the difference is less noticeable.
The physical size of each detector pixel, measured in micrometers (μm). Common values are 17μm and 12μm.
How many times per second the thermal image updates, measured in Hertz (Hz).
The width of the area visible through the scope at a given distance, usually expressed in degrees or as meters at 100 meters. A wider FOV makes it easier to scan areas and acquire targets. FOV is determined by the combination of sensor size and lens focal length.

Rule of thumb: Stick to 2x digital zoom or less. Beyond that, the image quality degrades significantly.

Identification range is typically 25-30% of detection range. When comparing scopes, focus on identification range as the most practical specification.
Digital reticles in thermal scopes can be changed in color, style, and brightness. Common options include crosshair, duplex, mil-dot, and BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator). Since the reticle is digital, it's always visible regardless of target temperature or background.
