Feral hogs have adapted to avoid humans by becoming almost exclusively nocturnal feeders. They emerge after dark to root through crop fields, pastures, and food plots. Thermal imaging gives hunters a massive advantage:
Resolution: 384x288 minimum. Hog hunting often involves identifying multiple animals in a group and choosing specific targets. Higher resolution helps distinguish size and orientation at distance.
Refresh rate: 50 Hz strongly recommended. Hogs move quickly when spooked, and a smooth image is essential for tracking running targets.
Lens size: 35mm is the sweet spot for most hog hunting scenarios. It provides enough magnification for 200-300 yard shots while maintaining a wide enough field of view to scan fields.
Detection range: 1,000+ yards. You want to spot hogs from a distance so you can plan your approach without spooking them.
White hot is the most popular palette for hog hunting. Animals appear as bright white shapes against a darker background, making them easy to spot and track. Black hot works equally well, it's a matter of personal preference.
Red hot or ironbow palettes can help in situations where you need to distinguish between different heat levels, like separating a warm hog from sun-heated ground in the early evening.
Set up on an elevated position overlooking agricultural fields or food plots. Use the lowest magnification to scan wide areas systematically. Hogs will appear as bright shapes moving across darker terrain. Once located, increase magnification to identify your target.
