Thermal Scope Care: Battery, Lens, and Storage Tips

A thermal scope is one of the most advanced and expensive optics you will ever mount on a rifle. Unlike traditional glass scopes that rely on passive optics, thermal scopes contain sensitive electronic sensors, digital processors, rechargeable batteries, and germanium lens elements that require specific care. Proper maintenance keeps your scope performing at peak capability for years, while neglect can degrade image quality, shorten battery life, or cause premature failure. Germanium Lens Care
The objective lens on a thermal scope is not glass. It is germanium, a semiconductor material that is transparent to long-wave infrared radiation. Germanium lenses typically have specialized anti-reflective coatings that are critical to image quality and light transmission. Damaging these coatings degrades your scope's thermal sensitivity (NETd) and overall image clarity.
What to use: Only clean germanium lenses with a lens cloth or microfiber specifically designed for optics. If you need a liquid cleaner, use lens cleaning solution rated for coated optics. Never household glass cleaner, alcohol wipes, or solvents. A few drops of lens solution on a microfiber cloth is all you need.
How to clean: Start by using a lens blower bulb or very soft brush to remove loose dust and debris. Never wipe a dry, dusty lens, grit particles will scratch the coating. Once loose particles are cleared, gently wipe the lens in a circular motion from center to edge with your damp microfiber cloth. Use minimal pressure. Germanium is softer than glass and its coatings are more delicate than those on a traditional riflescope.
What to avoid:
Never use compressed air cans. The propellant can leave residue on the lens coating
Never use your shirt, a paper towel, or tissues. They are abrasive on coated germanium
Never touch the lens with your fingers. Oils from skin are difficult to remove and can etch coatings over time
Never submerge the lens in any cleaning solution
Keep the lens cap on whenever the scope is not in active use. This single habit prevents the vast majority of lens cleaning needs.
Battery Best Practices
Thermal scopes consume significantly more power than traditional scopes (which consume none). Your scope's battery is a critical component that directly affects field reliability. Poor battery habits are one of the most common causes of thermal scope frustration.
Charging
Use the included charger or a charger specified by the manufacturer. Third-party fast chargers can deliver incorrect voltage or amperage that degrades lithium cells over time.
Do not leave batteries on the charger for days. Once fully charged, remove them. Prolonged trickle charging generates unnecessary heat and reduces long-term capacity.
Charge before every outing. Heading to the field with a half-charged battery is asking for a dead scope at the worst possible moment. Top off the night before every hunt.
Avoid charging immediately after heavy use. Let the battery cool to room temperature first. Charging a hot battery accelerates cell degradation.
Storage
For short-term storage (days to weeks): Leave the battery at around 50-70% charge. Fully charged lithium batteries stored long-term lose capacity faster.
For long-term storage (months): Remove the battery from the scope entirely. Store it at 40-60% charge in a cool, dry location. Check and top off every 2-3 months to prevent deep discharge.
Never store a fully depleted battery. Lithium cells that sit at zero charge for extended periods can suffer permanent capacity loss or fail to charge at all.
Temperature matters. Batteries stored in hot environments (car trunk in summer, attic) degrade rapidly. Room temperature or slightly below is ideal.

Firmware Updates
Modern thermal scopes are essentially specialized computers. Manufacturers release firmware updates that can improve image processing, add features, fix bugs, and sometimes unlock better performance from existing hardware. Skipping firmware updates means leaving potential improvements on the table.
Check for updates quarterly or before the start of each hunting season
Follow the manufacturer's update procedure exactly. Interrupting a firmware update (by removing the battery, disconnecting the cable, or turning off the scope) can brick the device.
Fully charge the battery before updating. A scope that dies mid-update is a scope that may need factory service.
Back up your zero profiles and settings before updating if your scope supports it, as some updates reset user configurations.
Read the release notes. Some updates change default settings or menu layouts. Knowing what changed prevents confusion in the field.
Long-Term Storage
If you are storing your thermal scope for an extended period between seasons, take these steps to ensure it is ready when you need it again:
Clean the lens thoroughly before storage. Residue left on the germanium coating for months can become harder to remove.
Remove the battery and store it separately at partial charge.
Store in a padded case in a climate-controlled environment. Avoid attics, garages, and vehicles where temperatures and humidity swing dramatically.
Include silica gel packets in the storage case to absorb ambient moisture. Replace or recharge the packets periodically.
Keep the lens caps on and, if available, use the rubber eyepiece cover as well to keep dust out of both ends.
Store the scope away from strong magnetic fields and electronics that generate heat.
Humidity and Moisture Protection
Thermal scopes are rated with an IP (Ingress Protection) code that indicates their dust and water resistance. Common ratings like IPX7 mean the scope can handle temporary submersion, while IPX6 handles heavy rain. However, these ratings assume all seals and caps are properly seated and the housing is undamaged.
Regardless of the IP rating:
Dry your scope after exposure to rain, snow, or heavy condensation. Wipe down the housing and let it air dry in a ventilated space. Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer.
Check battery compartment seals regularly. O-rings can dry out, crack, or collect debris that breaks the seal. A tiny gap in a battery door seal allows moisture to reach electronics.
Avoid rapid temperature changes when possible. Moving a cold scope into a warm, humid environment causes condensation on and potentially inside the optic. Let the scope acclimate gradually. Leaving it in its case for 15-20 minutes when moving between extreme environments helps.
Never store a wet scope in a sealed case. Trapped moisture with no ventilation creates the perfect environment for corrosion and fungal growth on internal components.
Carrying and Transport
How you carry and transport your thermal scope matters more than many hunters realize. A quality hard case or padded soft case is essential for vehicle transport. Thermal scopes bouncing around in a truck bed, loose in a range bag, or stuffed in a pack without protection are absorbing impacts that can shift zero, damage electronics, or crack lens coatings.
For transport:
Use a rigid or semi-rigid case with foam inserts that fit your scope or rifle
Keep the scope mounted on the rifle during transport if the rifle has its own case. This eliminates one mount/dismount cycle
Ensure the lens caps are secure before casing the rifle
When flying or shipping, use a hard-sided, lockable case with ample padding
What NOT to Do With a Thermal Scope
Never point it at the sun or an intense heat source like a welding arc. The thermal sensor can be permanently damaged by overwhelming infrared input.
Never attempt to disassemble the scope. Thermal scopes are precision-assembled in clean environments. Opening the housing voids your warranty and introduces dust, moisture, and misalignment.
Never use chemical solvents on any part of the scope. Gun cleaning solvents, bore cleaner, and CLP are all harmful to lens coatings, housing seals, and rubber components.
Never dry-fire excessively with the scope mounted unless the scope is rated for it. Some thermal scopes are sensitive to the sharp, unpadded recoil impulse of dry-firing.
Never ignore error messages or display artifacts. Flickering pixels, persistent dead spots, or unusual error codes are early signs of issues that are cheaper to fix under warranty than after it expires.

Battery fully charged

Reticle is visible and in correct position
