Choosing the right palette is not just about personal preference. Different palettes genuinely perform better in specific conditions, and switching between them in the field can mean the difference between spotting a target and missing it entirely. White Hot (Most Popular)

How it works: Warmer objects appear white or bright gray. Cooler objects appear dark gray or black. This is the most commonly used palette and the default on most thermal devices.

Black Hot (The Underrated Alternative)

How it works: The inverse of white hot. Warm objects appear black or dark gray, while cool objects appear white or light gray.

Ironbow

How it works: A multi-color palette that displays temperature gradients as a smooth transition from dark blue (coolest) through red and orange to bright yellow or white (hottest). The name comes from its resemblance to heated iron changing color.

When to use it:

Why it works: By mapping temperature differences to a wide color spectrum, ironbow displays more nuance than two-tone palettes. The trade-off is that it can be visually busy, making fast target acquisition slightly harder than white or black hot.

Rainbow (High Contrast)

How it works: Similar in concept to ironbow but uses a broader, more vivid color spectrum. Temperature zones are mapped to distinct colors across the full rainbow. Blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and white.

When to use it:

Why it works: Rainbow provides the most color variation but can be overwhelming for fast-paced hunting. Most hunters avoid it as a primary palette but find it useful for specific analytical tasks.
