Zeroing a thermal scope is the foundation of a reliable night hunt. Without a proper zero, even the best optics can send you chasing shadows instead of game. Start by mounting the scope securely on a stable platform, making sure the base is level and the rings are snug but not over‑tightened.
Set your target at the distance you plan to shoot most often - 100 yards is a common baseline for hogs and coyotes. Use a solid, non‑moving target and fire a few rounds to establish a reference point. Adjust the windage and elevation knobs in small increments, watching the reticle shift on the thermal image until the point of impact lines up with the point of aim.
One of the biggest mistakes hunters make is zeroing at the wrong distance and then expecting the same point of impact at closer or farther ranges. Thermal scopes also have parallax settings; neglecting to set the correct parallax distance can cause the reticle to drift as you move the scope. Another common error is forgetting to re‑zero after any major bump, recoil shock, or when swapping batteries, as these can shift the internal optics.
Finally, give your scope a quick check before each hunt. Verify that the reticle is still centered, the focus is clear, and the zero holds at your reference distance. A few minutes of verification can save you from missed shots and wasted ammo, keeping your night hunt both productive and enjoyable.
