Wind is the silent partner of every night hunt. Hogs rely heavily on their sense of smell, so a gentle breeze blowing toward you can carry your scent straight to a sounder. Aim to hunt with the wind at your back or set up on a ridge where the wind is split, forcing the hogs to approach up- or cross-wind. Light breezes also keep vegetation moving, which can hide your heat signature on a thermal scope.
Moonlight dictates how visible a hog is both to you and to the animals themselves. A bright full moon can make a hog more wary because it can see your silhouette and any movement on the ground. Many hunters prefer a waning or new moon when the landscape is dim and the hogs are less likely to pause. If you must hunt on a bright night, use low profile blinds and keep your movements as slow as possible.
Timing is about syncing your presence with the hogs' natural activity patterns. After a hot day, hogs tend to feed heavily in the early evening and then settle into a wallow before resuming movement around midnight. The pre-dawn hours are another prime window as the animals leave their bedding to forage again. Plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes before the expected activity spike so you can let your thermal optics adjust and settle your nerves.
A quick planning checklist can turn good instincts into a successful hunt: check the wind forecast and note the direction for the upcoming hours; look up the lunar phase and decide whether you need additional concealment; set your departure time to hit the early evening feed and the midnight resurgence; scout the area ahead of time to locate wallows, water sources, and travel corridors; and pack a lightweight thermal scope, a reliable rangefinder, and a sturdy tripod for steady shooting. With wind, moon, and timing all aligned, you give yourself the best chance to bring home a trophy hog.
