Thermal palettes are the color schemes that translate heat signatures into images you can see on your scope. The right palette can make a faint animal stand out against clutter, while the wrong one can hide it in a sea of similar tones. Understanding how each palette works is the first step to consistent night success.
White hot displays hotter objects as bright white and cooler backgrounds as dark gray or black. This high contrast works well in warm weather when the ground and vegetation are already hot, because the animal’s body heat still pops out. Black hot does the opposite - hot objects appear black and cooler areas show up in shades of gray or white. It is useful in cooler evenings or early mornings when the ambient temperature is low and the background is dark, allowing the animal’s heat to become a dark silhouette against a lighter field.
When hunting hogs in dense brush, a white hot palette often gives you the edge because the foliage can be warm and blend with the background on a black hot display. The bright hog outline cuts through the clutter. For coyotes in open fields or snowy terrain, black hot can be advantageous; the animal’s heat shows as a dark shape against the bright ground, making it easier to track movement at a distance.
A practical tip is to start each hunt with the default palette, then switch based on what you see. If the scene looks washed out and you’re missing details, flip to the opposite palette. Most modern scopes let you toggle quickly, so experiment during your first few minutes and lock in the setting that gives you the clearest silhouette.
Remember that temperature shifts throughout the night. As the air cools, you may need to switch from white hot to black hot to maintain contrast. Keep an eye on the sky and ground temperature, and let the palette adapt to the conditions - that’s how you stay one step ahead of the game.
