White Hot vs Black Hot: Picking the Right Thermal Palette for Night Hunts

White hot and black hot are the two most common palette settings on modern thermal scopes. White hot displays warmer objects as bright whites and cooler background as dark shades, which makes it easy to spot a hog or coyote against a cool night sky. Black hot does the opposite, rendering warm targets as dark silhouettes on a bright background, which can help conceal your own heat signature when you are moving through open fields.

The choice often comes down to ambient temperature and background clutter. In cold conditions below freezing, white hot provides strong contrast because the animals stand out as bright spots against a deep black landscape. When the air is warm or the ground retains heat, black hot can make the background glow and push the animal into a darker shade that is still easy to pick out. For heavily vegetated areas, a gray hot or a mixed palette can reduce glare from sunlit leaves and let you focus on the shape of the animal.

For hog hunting, you usually want a palette that highlights the animal’s bulk and movement. White hot works well in swampy or riverine environments where the water stays cool and the hog’s body heat creates a stark white blob. In open prairie where the ground radiates heat after sunset, black hot can make the hog appear as a dark shape against a bright horizon, helping you track it across long distances.

Coyote hunters often operate in more varied terrain and may need to switch palettes quickly. A good rule of thumb is to start with white hot at the beginning of the hunt, then flip to black hot if the background starts to wash out the scene. Many modern scopes let you toggle palettes with a thumb button, so practice the switch in daylight to develop muscle memory.

Regardless of the palette you choose, remember that proper reticle selection, focus adjustment and a steady stance are just as important as the color scheme. Spend time in your backyard or a low‑traffic field to see how each palette reacts to different temperatures and backgrounds, then apply those lessons on the real hunt for hogs and coyotes.
