When you pick up a thermal scope the first number you might see is NETD, which stands for Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference. In hunter terms it’s the smallest temperature change the sensor can notice. A low NETD means the device can pick out tiny differences in heat, like a coyote’s breath on a cool night, while a higher NETD may miss those subtle cues.

Think of NETD like the grain of a camera sensor. A scope with a NETD of .05 degrees Celsius will show a cleaner, more detailed picture than one with .15 degrees. That extra detail can be the difference between seeing a hog’s outline in dense brush or just a vague blob. It also helps reduce “noise” - those speckled dots that can make a scene look grainy and distract you from the target.

For the field hunter the key takeaway is to match the NETD to the conditions you hunt in. If you often hunt in cool, clear evenings where animal heat signatures are subtle, aim for a lower NETD. If you hunt in warmer weather or in open terrain where animals stand out more, a slightly higher NETD may be acceptable and can come with other benefits like longer battery life.

When you’re shopping, ask the dealer for the NETD rating and compare it side by side with other specs like resolution and refresh rate. A lower NETD is usually a good sign, but remember it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
