The Bureau of Land Management started work today in the Fifteenmile Herd Management Area of Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin to improve the long‑term health of the wild horse herd and the rangelands they graze. The area covers about 81,000 acres and recent infrared surveys show the herd at roughly 386 animals, well above the management goal of 100‑230. Because the herd can grow 15‑20 % each year and has no natural predators, the BLM’s effort to bring numbers down will help prevent further depletion of forage and water, which could also affect hunting pressure for hogs and coyotes on adjacent lands.
