Resolution is the most visible spec on a thermal scope, but it is only part of the story. A 384x288 sensor packs 110,592 pixels, while a 640x480 sensor delivers 307,200 pixels. The higher pixel count creates a denser image, which can make small details stand out at the same magnification.
For coyote hunters the key benefit of a 640 sensor is identification range. With more pixels, the same target fills a larger portion of the display, letting you see ear shape, tail flick, or even a glint of eyes at longer distances. A 384 sensor will still show a moving shape at those ranges, but you may need to get closer to confirm it is a coyote and not a deer or a stray dog.
The trade‑off comes in cost, weight, and battery life. Higher‑resolution sensors require more processing power, which can add a few ounces to the unit and drain the battery faster. They also tend to be pricier, sometimes double the price of a comparable 384 model. If you hunt in thick cover or work at 200 yards or less, the extra detail may not translate into a higher kill rate.
Bottom line: choose a 640 sensor if you regularly stalk coyotes at 300 yards or more, need the extra clarity for precise shot placement, and are willing to pay the premium. Stick with a 384 sensor if you hunt in tighter terrain, have a tighter budget, or value longer battery life. Both resolutions can be effective; the decision rests on how you hunt and what you value most in a thermal optic.
