Resolution in a thermal sensor is measured by the number of pixels that make up the image. A 384x288 array delivers about 110,000 pixels, while a 640x480 array provides roughly 307,000 pixels. The larger array can render finer detail, but it also requires a larger lens and often a bigger power draw.
For coyote hunting the key question is how far you need to see and identify a target. In open fields a 640 sensor may add a few extra yards of detection range, letting you spot a moving silhouette earlier. In dense brush the extra detail is often lost in vegetation, so the practical gain shrinks to almost nothing.
Higher‑resolution units tend to be heavier, cost more, and can drain batteries faster. They also usually have a narrower field of view, which means you have to sweep the scene more to cover the same area. If you hunt from a vehicle or a stand with a clear line of sight, the trade‑offs may be worth it; if you move on foot through thick cover, a lighter 384 model can be more comfortable and still give you a solid picture.
Bottom line: choose a 640 sensor when you regularly hunt at longer ranges, need the extra identification detail for quick shot placement, and can accommodate the added weight and cost. For most night coyote hunts that stay within 200 yards and involve a lot of movement, a 384 sensor delivers reliable performance without the extra baggage.
