Why Proper Mounting Matters More Than You Think

A thermal scope is a precision instrument, and how it is mounted to your rifle determines everything. Point of impact consistency, reticle alignment, eye relief comfort, and whether it holds zero through recoil and field handling. A poorly mounted scope will shift, cant, or come loose, turning an expensive optic into a frustrating liability.

Mounting a thermal scope follows the same core principles as mounting any rifle scope, with a few additional considerations specific to thermal optics. This guide walks through every step, from choosing the right mount hardware to final zero confirmation.

Step 1: Understand Your Rail Type

Before you buy any mount hardware, identify the rail on your rifle:

If your rifle has a different action or stock mounting system, you may need a rail adapter installed first. This should be done by a qualified gunsmith if you are not experienced with action screws and headspacing.

Step 2: Choose the Right Mount Type

Thermal scopes mount differently depending on their form factor:

QD vs. fixed mounts: Fixed mounts are inherently more rigid and are the best choice if the thermal scope will live permanently on the rifle. QD mounts add convenience at the cost of slight additional complexity. If you choose QD, invest in a quality mount. Inexpensive QD systems often fail to return to zero consistently.

Step 3: Select the Correct Ring Height

Ring height determines how high the scope sits above the bore. Choosing the wrong height causes problems:

Thermal scopes often have larger objective lens housings than traditional glass scopes, so you may need medium or high rings where low rings would normally suffice. The correct approach is to measure the clearance needed:

When in doubt, go one size higher. A slightly elevated scope with a proper cheek riser is better than a scope jammed against the barrel.

Step 4: Position for Proper Eye Relief

Eye relief is the distance from the rear eyepiece to your eye where you see a full, clear image. Thermal scopes typically have generous eye relief (60 to 100mm), but proper positioning still matters:

Unlike traditional glass scopes, thermal scopes do not produce a scope shadow when eye alignment is slightly off. The digital display simply shows a black border. Find the position where that border disappears consistently.

Step 5: Level the Reticle

A canted reticle causes point-of-impact shifts that increase with distance. Leveling is not optional, it is essential for accurate shooting.

Step 6: Torque to Specification

This is where most DIY mounting jobs go wrong. Over-tightening crushes the scope tube and can damage internal electronics. A serious concern with thermal scopes that contain sensitive sensor assemblies. Under-tightening allows the scope to shift under recoil.

Use a torque wrench. A quality inch-pound torque wrench costs less than a single scope ring and prevents catastrophic over-tightening. Tighten ring screws in an alternating cross pattern (like tightening lug nuts) to apply even clamping pressure around the tube.

Apply a small amount of blue (medium-strength) threadlocker to all screws. This prevents vibration loosening while still allowing future disassembly. Never use red (permanent) threadlocker on scope mounts.

Step 7: Confirm Zero

With the scope securely mounted and leveled, it is time to zero. Most thermal scopes use a digital zeroing process:
